Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Stavis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I became interested in film at a very young age. A family friend had an improv comedy troupe, and they had started making short films for the 48-Hour Film Project. One weekend, as a nine year old, I helped out however I could, and I became fascinated with every aspect of filmmaking. I’ve tried to model my career from that initial feeling I had- and tried every aspect of filmmaking until one or two clicked.
I have always been inspired by cinematography and attempted to hone my skills for years. I moved out to LA to officially start my career in Hollywood. I worked on feature films, commercials, and everything in between.
Shortly after, my sister Chelsea Stavis and I decided to start a film production company, StavisFilm, to produce the projects we were passionate about. Over the last three years, we’ve grown exponentially into a bi-coastal full-service production company involved in several feature films, short films, television shows, and proof of concepts for new creators.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My sister and I had both worked in different parts of the film industry when we decided to start a production company, Chelsea as an actor and myself as a Director of Photography. It was definitely a learning experience to handle every aspect of a project as a producer, getting to know all the standards and practices in the industry. There have definitely been a few struggles, as I’m sure any two siblings could imagine, working together 15 hours a day for years in stressful environments, but we’re so proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together.
The one hope I have moving forward is that the talented people throughout the film industry could help usher in more ambitious producers and filmmakers into the industry. Although I’m still learning new things every day, I try to do my best to impart any knowledge or lessons I’ve learned throughout my journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
StavisFilm is a family-owned and operated business, a bi-coastal full-service production company capable of taking any idea from script to screen. Chelsea and Andrew Stavis, or “the Stavis Siblings,” specialize in introducing the work of new and passionate creators. We are excited about so many projects we have in the pipeline, where StavisFilm has been involved in every step of the process.
During the covid pandemic, the world and the industry had an abrupt halt. We attempted to navigate our way through by safely completing new projects and making sure we would be ready to meet the demand for content when the world got back on track.
We have spent the last year creating a custom-built, commercial-grade editing suite and sound recording studio located in the Hollywood Hills, designed to meet the needs for every aspect of post-production for in-house StavisFilm projects and for other production companies’ projects. A complete Dolby Vision Mastering and 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos Mix Suite. We are incredibly excited to get this studio off the ground and have just completed our second project before our grand opening this month.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, all my friends saw me as the film guy. Since I knew what I wanted to do from such a young age, my passion truly became my career. Of course, I had other interests- played sports, spent time with friends and family, but I knew I wanted to jump into the Hollywood scene as soon as I could. I was incredibly social growing up, making friends easily. The Los Angeles experience has been an interesting adjustment as I’ve gotten to know amazing people throughout the industry and made great friends, but almost half of my time here has been throughout Covid. I’m excited that the world and the industry are jumping back into action at full force.
