Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Park.
Andrew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Art is kind of a weird, inevitable thing to me when in hindsight. When I was in my junior year of high school, my mom had come into contact with an ArtCenter alumni who majored in Graphic Design. He helped me build an Illustration portfolio to apply for ArtCenter. He wasn’t even sure I’d get in since I started the whole drawing and painting thing so late. I fell in love with the figure ever since my first figure drawing class at ArtCenter. I had never drawn the figure from life before and a lot of things just started clicking in my head, the chili had started to stir! The rest is a mystery to myself even, an absorption of different skills and lessons from the countless, brilliant minds of faculty and fellow peers. Things just kind of happen when you’re in a devotional mindset.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I look back, it all feels really smooth. I don’t recall the transitions of my life being rocky, even though I was actually struggling when it was all happening. There’s definitely a cycle of decline that happens where I don’t feel like improving or pushing something new. I felt like the Stanford Duck, seemingly calm on the surface, but paddling furiously to stay afloat. It’s just very hard to please yourself and your standards.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I mainly paint and do life drawings. It includes portrait commissions and teaching figure drawing to high schoolers, ArtCenter students, and anyone else that signs up for my classes. I’m known for my portraits and figures so that’s where I’ve decided to set my feet on. I’ve gotten almost all of my work without me having to really look, which gives me assurance that my work is engaging. I always try to make my work with honesty in the sense that I am content with the end product. Nothing leaves the easel if it doesn’t make my heart tingle.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the people of LA. Gives me some mental juice for my metaphorical easel back home. I don’t like the congestion in LA though.
