Today we’d like to introduce you to Andres Di Bono.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Back in 1995, I saw a music video of Michael Jackson… That blew my mind and right then, being a 13 years old boy, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: “I want to do movies”, I said.
I started reading magazines about film techniques and got emerged in the Editing world just a few months later. I learned most of the software on my own and was self-taught. Later on, I started helping on a local TV station where I was observing and learning from the professionals of the industry. I spent many of my teenage years by working, practicing and reading.
In my home country Uruguay, I always felt the desire to expand my horizons and go abroad. I wanted to explore the world and work on the international market.
In 2008, I made one of the most difficult decisions of my life: to move to the United States all by myself… and I did it, I moved to Miami. This city was the most suitable for me to adapt to, culture and language wise. Yet still, the first years there weren’t easy at all.
Five years later, I was hired as a Freelance Editor on a TV Station and there I learned new editing software and techniques. Eventually, I made a decision to move to the heart of the American film industry – Los Angeles – where I reside currently.
In California, I started editing a lot of sketches, short films, feature films, etc… However, after being an editor for 20+ years, I had so many ideas in my mind that I wanted to bring to life, that I decided not to hesitate anymore, step out of my comfort zone and become a Director.
My directorial debut “Vika”, was one of my first biggest projects… It felt like having a child… Something that I watched growing, first just written on paper and finally it became the reality. Just recently, the short film “Vika” found it’s home on Amazon and I am beyond excited that people from all over the world can watch it now.
My second short film “The Curse of YouTube” was based on a story by Mauro Croche, famous Argentinian writer. I worked closely with him to adapt it to the screen.
In July 2019, I wrote and directed two short films: “The Dark Web” and “The Datekeeper”. Both of them are currently in Post-production.
After having a long Editing career, I am now immersing myself more and more into Directing. I find it inspiring and fascinating. I love to create ideas and I enjoy the process of working with actors and the rest of the crew, trying to get them on board with my vision.
For the future, I plan to keep expanding myself as a Director, there are many wonderful ideas that I want to explore and bring to life on screen.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was very challenging to move from my home country Uruguay to the United States. There were a lot of cultural and language differences. It’s been a struggle to reach a financial stability here, but I never lost my persistence as a human being, I was always fighting for my dream and I am still now.
Going into directing was a complete new challenge. Working with a diverse cast and crew, people from different countries and cultures, it took some time to adjust and find a balance and an order for everyone to work smoothly together.
Not to mention, Los Angeles is the most competitive city in terms of filmmaking, so it is always a struggle to create a story that will interest people and make them want to invest their time, knowledge and money into the project.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is full of opportunities, you never know when the phone is going to ring and the job of your dreams come. It’s a city where everyday something is happening, so you have the chance to go out there, meet people, surround yourself with them and let them know who you are… because at the end of the day that’s the key in this industry: “who knows you”…
Los Angeles can also be a little intimidating because there’s a lot of people fighting for the same opportunity as yours… You also will meet a lot of people who pretend to be something that they are not and make you lose your precious time!
