Meet Andrea Damian of Swag Promo in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Damian.

Andrea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up on the east coast in the outskirts of Washington, D.C.  Throughout high school and college, I primarily worked in hospitals.  I found myself wanting to find a way to work in a creative and graphic environment.  When I began my college career, I initially proposed completing a double major in both Art and Business.  My college advisor found this to be a ridiculous notion.  After being discouraged, I spent one year attending school in London and traveling extensively.  During this time, I constructed a portfolio that gained me admission to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.  It was during my time in Pasadena that I took a job with a small local screen printer as a receptionist.  I remained there for twenty years quickly working my way up to purchasing, bookkeeping, sales and ultimately operational management.  I dedicated myself to this small business and was beyond committed to their success.

After many years it was time for me to start my own business.

My first move was to secure a website, and design and print business cards.  Next, I reached out to friends and began networking like crazy!  I have been so fortunate to have worked with some phenomenal clients who have provided me with excellent referrals.  I have now been up and running (literally and figuratively!) for 2.5 years.  I’m beyond pleased to report that my second year showed 100% growth over my first year.  I can only hope to continue to experience this great rate of success.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I consider myself very lucky in that I have not faced many struggles and challenges in launching my business.  Initially, I did have to identify the suppliers and other necessary industry contacts on whom I could rely upon and trust to provide the best services possible to my clients.  Once I identified the key players, I was able to create a strong network of smart, talented and knowledgeable sources that I can depend on.  I went into this venture with the notion that there was no option but to make this work.  I have been extremely determined and committed.  I do not allow any potential obstacle or challenge deter me.  Every stumble and possible set back is part of the learning process and only makes me stronger and better at what I can deliver for my clients.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Swag Promo provides custom branded apparel and marketing merchandise.  People use these items to promote their company, organization, event, or even as a means of showing employee appreciation or incentives.  We provide anything from souvenirs distributed at schools, museums, restaurants, non profits and can accommodate large volume overseas productions.  I am most proud of the client relations I have created and the trust they have in Swag Promo to provide a quality product that is delivered on time with responsiveness, conscientiousness, and care every step of the way. My customers know they are able to search online and purchase similar products themselves, but they choose Swag for the personal attention they get that is so important.

What were you like growing up?
I would say my childhood afforded me a certain amount of freedom.  Like many children of my generation, I spent my days engaged outdoors engaging in physical activities.  I would ride my bike, climb trees and explore.  I had many interests.  Those who know me now might find it funny to learn that I was not very verbal or communicative.  People might have labeled me quiet and shy.  However, I was very amiable.  Ironically, I was fairly autonomous.  At the age of 13, I held two jobs.  I worked at the local library for three years and I delivered newspapers.  I always had a love and appreciation for Advertising and Package Design and working at Swag Promo allows me to help your customers create their own version of advertising and package design.
