Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Sofia Gomez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Two years ago I was offered my dream job at my dream company in the fashion industry. I left Texas and moved out to L.A to pursue the opportunity. A year into my job the company filed for bankruptcy and I was laid off. Three months prior to being laid off my mom had made me a bikini for a trip I was making with friends, a couple followers on Instagram asked where it is was from when I posted an image wearing it. Fast forward to the day I got laid off, I arrived to my apartment and with the determination that this was not the end of my time in LA or in the fashion industry and I was not going to let this bring me down, I decided to launch what is now known as Sofia Los Angeles.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
NO! Not at all. My first and biggest struggle was money. I launched a business the day I got laid off with no severance pay, no savings, schools loans and a pile of bills. I somehow made it work. Because I had time, I invested a lot of time in networking and seeking opportunities that would help my “project” grow. I eventually got a grant that helped me out a whole lot financially. Fast forward to now, I landed a few jobs in the industry, 3 to be exact and now I am facing the challenge to find enough time to dedicate to my business while working a full-time schedule to be able to pay my bills. And of course there are SO many smaller struggles that I face each day as a first-time business owner. Even the simplest things like shipping has come with its struggles and tears. haha
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sofia Los Angeles story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is called Sofia Los Angeles, it is a special occasion swimwear brand and we are known for our original 3-dimensional flower swimsuit. What I am most proud of is the authenticity that we are building as well as the hard work that goes into it. I am also proud that we have been granted funding. I think what sets us apart is our branding, designs and the story behind our business.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
No bad luck, no good luck just a whole lot of hard work.
