Meet Amy Haeussler of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Haeussler.

Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago in a large dysfunctional family – which turned out to be the perfect launch into a career in comedy! Being “one of” the middle children (there was 4 of us) – so didn’t even get my own official “middle child” title…So NATURALLY I was desperate to find my place somewhere, which led me to theater (eventually!)

After a decade of competitive swimming growing up, I took a turn and became a theater major at The University of Iowa (to my parent’s disappointment–“that’s not a stable career Amy!” –I can still here them now…and they’re not wrong!) Being involved in sports definitely gave me some of the stamina needed to keep going in the entertainment industry.

While in college a professor of mine kept telling me I need to go to Chicago after I graduate and do comedy. So I did. I went through the Conservatory and Writing programs at The Second City, then did improv at iO and produced/performed in a bunch of shows at The Annoyance in Chicago.

For the past 10+ years I’ve been doing improv and sketch comedy, which in turn has led me to screenwriting as well. I’m now currently performing every Sunday with The Sunday Company at The Groundlings here in LA.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I WISH. It has been a rollercoaster and nothing ever turns out the way you think it will, for better or worse. But that’s life. The hard moments I’ve found end up being the ones that have given me the most perspective and growth. Throughout my journey I’ve struggled with mental health and grief, after losing my mother and then a very close friend shortly after. It’s been some of the hardest moments of my life, but in turn it has given me the gift of depth in my writing I think. Being able to write and act has given me an outlet to express these experiences while also finding the humor in them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actress, writer and comedian. Currently I can be found performing sketch comedy with The Sunday Company at The Groundlings. I also have multiple pilots and a feature screenplay in the works. In my work, I particular love character-driven comedy. That goes for my performance style and writing.

I’m honestly most proud of just how far I’ve come. The fact that I’m still performing and I’m healthy feels like a miracle because of how low it is has felt at times. I’m finally learning to own who I am and what I have to offer, and I’m really proud of myself for that.

Sidebar: To anyone who is struggling out there – you’re worth it. You’re important and your health is worth fighting for. [insert heart emoji]

How do you think about happiness?
Animals. Especially dogs. Especially MY dog! (shoutout to Fonzi!) They are just so authentically and innocently themselves! They just want to love you and be loved. And I love them for it.

I also love to travel. Being in really remote places gives me a sense of peace and joy I constantly crave.

And eating goodass food with my boyfriend. Paying for food that’s worth it, makes me very happy. 🙂
