Meet Amy Gordon of A G Ceramics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Gordon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
After a career as a graphic designer and fashion art director, I spent the next 23 years raising my three wonderful children.

One summer day, my three dogs escaped (as they often do) and wandered into a neighbors yard. It was then that I met Jacqueline Stanford, a former triathlete and neighbor of 18 years now running a pottery workshop out of her backyard. Out of curiosity, I signed up for one of her classes and serendipitously found my passion for the wheel.

I fell in love. It wasn’t long before I had a studio of my own where I found myself spending hours perfecting my craft. I started with simple concepts like bowls and vases then transitioned into more intricate pieces like lamps and carved vessels.

Most of my work is wheel throw although I do some hand builds pieces here and there. If I’m not behind the wheel, I’m either cooking, tending to my chickens, maintaining my vegetable garden, or playing with my three crazy dogs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle is the time involved and the unpredictability of the craft. The long process of creating one single piece is so intricate and has many steps and most people who have never done pottery really don’t understand that. One piece usually takes up to four weeks to create beginning with throwing it on the wheel, drying, trimming, sanding, the first firing, the long process of glazing, then the second firing, and the final sanding.

And within each of those stages, there are so many things that could go wrong… the piece could crack, explode in the kiln, warp, or the glaze could run, craze, or just not come out the color you expected. But when you open the kin after the final glaze fire and you see the beautiful result, it is all so worth it. I truly do pottery because I absolutely love it!

A G Ceramics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is mostly wheel thrown pottery with a specialty in carved pieces. That is my favorite part…carving the pieces. I get into a zone, and I just love it. no two pieces are ever the same, so they become very unique in themselves for that reason.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was really shocked by how the audience on Instagram has been so supportive with such positive feedback. The pottery community is full of such amazing people. My sales are building, but in all fairness, I am awful about updating my website!!.
