Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. When I first began losing my hair, I was starring on the CBS Soap Opera Love of Life and No One could know. There was no Amy Gibson out there to guide me through the quagmire of fear, confusion, and lack of knowledge, so I had to find my way silently.
Throughout my 20 years starring on television, I was so afraid I’d be ousted from the industry as some kind of bald freak as no one was even talking about hair loss that I became very good at dodging all the bullets; from making sure my wig would stay secure when someone gave me a hug to hiding it from my cast mates, producers, the press and even dates – now that was interesting. I talk a lot about that in my book; Sex, Wigs, and Whispers; Love and Life with Hair Loss. I went from counting every hair – to not washing my hair at all for days for fear of losing more of it – to giving up participating in golf tournaments for fear that my bald spots would show when the wind blew, that I would pass on many wonderful networking opportunities which would have furthered my career.
I used to dance Jazz, but that too was a love I had to give up as I just didn’t feel pretty in a scarf or turban and wigs were too hot to dance in, hence that was thrown to the wind as well. There were many many things I stopped doing from sleep-overs with friends as I couldn’t stand sleeping in my wig (and they would ruin quickly and money was not easy to come by at that time) to finding myself to be more and more of a hermit and eating my depression away which then led me to losing many jobs due to weight gain, so it was a painful vicious cycle.
There was a two-year break between Young and The Restless and General Hospital and my bald spots had increased due to lack of funds for cortisone treatments, the only thing that kept them at bay. Eight weeks prior to beginning the role on General Hospital of an undercover detective that the producers of Y&R had created for me, I lost all my hair. It was a nightmare. And I had a small breakdown – for about four days! Then I had to get out of my depression and find a way to make this work! I needed the job – the money and the stability, so there was no choice but to find a solution!
After some serious thinking, I came up with a way to turn the undercover detective into one with seven different dialects and looks to get her man – thus utilizing wigs!
However, I had to wear the same on to and from work so everyone would think that was my own hair. And the wigs were so fabulous thatI had to quickly get used to people coming up spontaneously and touching them without jumping! I had to force myself not to second guess everyone at every moment obsessing over if they KNEW or not. In time, it got easier and the storyline worked great. The producer whom I confided in prior to filming was incredibly supportive and together we found ways to keep it quiet from the network, castmates and the industry. I am so grateful to this day to the makeup and hair people who respected my situation and protected me instead of exploiting me for their own gain, a common thread in Hollywood. And in time, after much exploration and surrender, I learned to love myself with or without hair.
