Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Atmore.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a small town in Oregon competing in swimming, waterpolo, gymnastics and tennis. After a traumatic knee injury left me unable to compete I became fascinated with the human body and ultimately discovered Physical Therapy as a way to teach my body how to heal on its own. I decided to pursue this career path fully around my sophomore year in college, taking all coursework necessary to apply to a DPT (Doctorate of Physical Therapy) program, and creating over time what would be in my eyes the best resume I could to showcase my passion, skill set and diversity. In 2007, my hard work paid off as I was accepted into the #1 DPT program at the time, USC.
In 2011, I earned my DPT degree and passed the Boards to become a Licensed Physical Therapist. I’ve worked in and around Los Angeles for various companies and found a passion in Sports Medicine working with athletes. I was able to understand their mindset being a former athlete and found joy in helping them return back to the playing field, safer and more athletically. In March of 2019 I left my 9-5 to take a leap into creating my own business. A good friend by the name of Rhea Jenkins gave me a nick name several years ago that just stuck, Amypedia. This is what I decided to call my new business. Since taking the leap I have been able to do more in 5 months than in the last 5 years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Most of the challenges have involved financial sacrifices and academic adversity (i.e., not passing a required class, academic probation, and failing examinations). I had great difficulty in school due to poor concentration which I later discovered to be ADHD. Regardless of these struggles, I never gave up. Each time I failed an exam I retook it. Instead of four years to complete my Bachelor’s degree, I took five. Instead of three years to complete my Doctorate I took 4. I now look at failure as the stepping stones to success.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Amypedia – what should we know?
Amypedia was established to empower patients with the knowledge to take care of their own bodies! I wanted a business that allowed me the freedom to treat patients privately while also allowing me to travel if needed. My practice is a place where patients receive 1:1 attention from their PT (me) for a full hour each and every time. In this infrastructure patients never feel rushed, receive more detailed instruction and care, and recover much quicker with better satisfaction.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest supporters were my closest friends and family members who believed in me. Along my journey, I would have to credit a few mentors who genuinely cared about my future. One who comes to mind is a Physical Therapist by the name of Ike Anunciado who strongly believed in my talents during college to be able to apply to PT school. Another by the name of Sally Ho who not only mentored me in PT school but helped me survive it physically and financially by offering me a job at her clinic. And lastly my best friend, Weslie, who had encouraged me to pursue my dreams before passing away in 2015.
