Today we’d like to introduce you to Aminat Odunbaku.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aminat. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to LA to follow my dreams as a model after I finished my PR degree in Texas. My goal of booking campaign ads and runway jobs came very quickly. After a while, I started to think about longevity in the business and decided I wanted to open an online clothing store at the age of 25. The store was doing ok, but I had to come up with a different plan to make more of a buzz, So I created a boutique PR company… and changing lanes by managing other local clothing designers and creating pop up events as a great way for all of us to make more revenue as the online market could be tough when you don’t really have a budget for mass marketing.
After planning these events and renting from spaces, I decided that If I opened my own I’d be able to do my own events, plus have others rent from me as well. I then started a crowdfunding and raised just enough to open a 6000 sq. ft warehouse studio space next to the Staple Center in Downtown Los Angeles. A dream come true.
Has it been a smooth road?
Opening any business is probably the hardest thing anyone could ever do. Physically and Mentally. When you are a new business owner you are extremely optimistic about your plan, sales, etc because it’s YOUR, dream and YOUR baby, but the truth is that sometimes you forget that it’s not YOUR ideas solely that make up the business. You have to consider the needs of your customers. You have to be patient and humble and know that you’re not going to make profit for the first 6 months. You have to have the “customers come first mentally” because you want clients to come back, good yelp reviews and a good word of mouth about your business.
Physically: if you don’t have the funds to hire anyone, you have to prepare to be the tour guide, site manager, janitor and handywoman all at once. Yes, you’ll have no life. But it has to be worthwhile otherwise you wouldn’t last.
You must be able to accept change, and be willing to accommodate everyone at the same time keep the integrity of the space. So, has it been a smooth road no, but it’s been worth it.

I’m so proud of the way I planned for the business to be successful at created a heartfelt loving artistic community in LA.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love best about LA is that my soul gets a massage everyday I’m here. I love that I’m in a land of weirdies such as myself as Texas wasn’t so comfy being odd. LA embraces me and what I least love about LA is driving, but that wouldn’t keep me from living here.
