Today we’d like to introduce you to Amiela Martinez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amiela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was younger, I started off making videos with my friend because we were both trying to start a YouTube channel (which I’m hoping to this day is still private). As time passed, I caught myself taking more pictures than videos and I would post them on Tumblr back when Instagram did not even exist. I took pictures of anything and everything that caught my attention or that I would simply want to remember. Tumblr is where I truly started opening up and expressing myself with photography, any image I would see and love I would print it out and begin forming a mood board, which to this day I still have up. I then finally decided to take a photography class in high school and there I was introduced to the basics of photoshop and it was completely mind-blowing knowing how powerful it was. From that point on, I realized photography was something I wouldn’t mind to continue exploring and studying moving forward. To this day, I believe it to be like time traveling, it’s a way to go back to a moment or a feeling in the past.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been smooth, more than anything I always struggled to figure out if it can lead to somewhere. Many times when people asked me what my profession was they’d expect the response of psychologist, doctor, dentist, and so on. There’s nothing wrong with those responses either, I myself wanted to be a psychologist but I came to find out I’ve always been a dreamer and always wanted to pursue what I truly love doing which is photography. Plus, I don’t think I’d make a good surgeon/dentist if my head is always in the clouds. When it comes to wanting to be an artist in general, I believe most people always see it more of a hobby than profession and so it makes you second guess what you’re passionate about. But I learned if it makes me happy and its something I feel passion towards then the rest doesn’t really matter in the end.
HighLeah – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I feel as though my business doesn’t always stay in one box, this way it doesn’t put restriction on what can be worked on. So I do like being involved in different fields of photography. The business offers portraits, events, interior design, street or travel, taking pictures of kids, and work on conceptual/personal projects.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is accomplishing all of my goals that I have set for myself and getting to where I want to be physically, emotionally and mentally.
