Today we’d like to introduce you to Amee and Monish Laxpati.
The husband and wife team, Dr. Laxpati and Amee, founded Alinea Medical Imaging on a mission to break barriers to healthcare including issues of transportation, language, cultural competency, trust, cost, and above all, lack of time.
Monish is a board-certified radiologist and Amee has a degree in management science and graphic design. They had traditional careers, Monish finishing a fellowship at Stanford University, and Amee as a Senior UI Designer at the Publicis Groupe. After completing fellowship, Monish was presented with an opportunity to buy a radiology practice and make it his own. Amee left her job in design to start this new venture. With both their varied skills and entrepreneurial spirits, they dove right in in order to creatively make an impact in the healthcare industry and improve the patient experience.
Dr. Laxpati is a Board Certified Radiologist who specializes in women’s imaging and abdominal imaging. As a Southern California native, he graduated summa cum laude from USC and with AOA honors from the Keck School of Medicine. He stayed in Los Angeles to complete a residency in radiology at the LAC+USC Medical Center. He then completed fellowship training in Body Imaging at Stanford University and Breast Imaging at USC.
His professional interests include minimally invasive breast procedures and radiation dose reduction techniques. As the Medical Director, he is dedicated to delivering the highest quality patient care and exceptional service to their referring physicians.
Amee has over 15 years of experience in operations, event planning, marketing and design in the finance, healthcare and digital media industries. Her background in graphic design with focus on brand identity, environmental and UI/UX design has given her a unique lens through which she has developed the Alinea’s brand identity and patient experience. While working as a client care coordinator at a high profile concierge health practice, she first realized the disparities in care that exist between the privileged and underserved populations.
She became determined to deliver the same level of convenient service to all patients regardless of their socioeconomic status. Her unique skill set and perspective along with entrepreneurial spirit allowed her to take the leap to start Alinea Medical Imaging in 2013. She is responsible for overseeing business operations, managing finances and overseeing marketing and outreach efforts across various platforms.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business is not for the faint of heart. Long hours are absolutely required to make a dream into reality. We wanted to make sure our two young girls had quality time with Mommy and Daddy, so we would work after they went to bed every night for years to develop and extend our reach.
There are challenges to owning every business. Every entrepreneur is faced with steep learning curves with issues that need to be addressed immediately. We quickly learned to wear multiple hats including accounting, HR and payroll, health plan contracting, and IT security as we couldn’t hire dedicated employees for those tasks.
We had limited access to capital loans to buy new software, hardware and medical equipment for our practice without grants or funding. Since we haven’t sought investments from VCs, we have taken every penny of revenue and invested it back into technology and new equipment to provide more access to patients.
One of the biggest struggles we had was human capital that were not vested in our mission. Since we took over an existing business, the employees that worked at the company prior to our purchase had no dedication or sense of purpose. It took us some time to turn it around and develop a company culture that we have now. Every single member of our current team work hard and long hours with the commitment and purpose of breaking barriers and helping improve lives by early detection. They are so amazing!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Alinea Medical Imaging was founded in 2013 and provides state of the art diagnostic imaging at our facilities in LA county and Orange County, but our pride and focus is to break barriers to healthcare by bringing the convenience of radiology services directly to patients. For example, we bring onsite Breast Cancer screening to women in their communities throughout the state of California. Our amazing staff drive to corners and pockets of urban and rural areas of the state to provide convenient mammograms to women regardless of their socioeconomic status and resources. Our staffs are bilingual English and Spanish, and we work with partners in different neighborhoods to provide language assistance to communities
We have performed 75,000+ mammograms since our founding and continue to grow in the state of California as the leading provider of Mobile Breast Cancer Screening. In 2016, we screened close to 20,000 women, and found 100+ breast cancers. We’re on track to screen over 30,000 women this year alone.
Our mobile program has had a remarkable impact on California’s cancer control initiative. Our dedication to attain sustainable solutions in healthcare is driving interest from non-profit organizations, insurance carriers, healthcare facilities, and employer groups to work together and deliver timely and convenient care to patients to increase overall wellness.
