Meet Amanda Klawitter of House of Flowers in Bakersfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Klawitter.

Established in 2008. A family run business, Owners Diana & Amanda Klawitter started their flower design studio with a couple of key concepts in mind: To provide an awesome product, with equally matched customer service, and to set themselves apart from the traditional cookie cutter designs of the current floral industry standards. With these key ideas in mind, this little flower shop that could has grown into the living breathing, growing, flower machine it is today and is adding a little Flora + Funk everywhere it goes!

Their Philosophy says it all: Exploring, Expanding, and Experimenting with the endless variety of flowers and nature is our passion. They love what they do and it shows in every interaction and production.

Has it been a smooth road?
The first three years were the toughest. Being a brick and mortar with overhead, trying to earn a living without a bankroll and being nobodies, all while trying to learn + expand upon our art in the community taught us a lot.

Our first year of business, we booked seven weddings. We were over the moon, we had nothing, we were nobody, but we were willing to learn everything we could, and be the best we possibly could because thats what we felt people deserved. We were blind to our competition, we just did what we thought was right. Provide a great product, excellent customer service matched with a passion for growth + sharing our perspective.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with House of Flowers – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our vision is to Explore, Expand & Experiment with flowers & nature’s endless variety in hopes we’re able to communicate the enrichment and importance of a personal relationship with the culture of flowers + nature with our community. Our lives have been so fulfilled by spending each day touching flowers, we really want to share this.

We’re so much more than a flower shop. We do it all! Weddings, corporate events, daily deliveries, workshops, plants, gifts from local artisans, monthly events showcasing local artists + musicians. We’re trying to give everyone a little something that may be missing from their daily lives. And we’re trying to communicate our perspective. We’re not your cookie cutter florist. We like pretty, but we also like funky. (Our tag line is Flora + Funk)

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the loyalty + support our city has shown us. Bakersfield is really hungry for growth + unique perspectives + experiences outside of the cookie cutter strip malls shopping experience.

The thing I dislike most about Bakersfield is basically the struggle we face with the growth of an appreciation towards arts + culture. Bakersfield is a very hard working ‘salt of the earth’ community whose careers rely heavily on oil and agriculture. Because of this, you have a lot of people working really hard, to make a living, and when they spend their money, they’re looking to do so on things/places that are sure bets, like big name chain stores/restaurants, they’re wanting something easy/carefree/consistent. Because of the lack of culture, we see a lot of our talented younger generations reaching + transplanting to places with established arts + culture, and so the cycle continues, and there is less of a training ground for small business/artists to practice + perfect their craft. As California becomes more expensive to live, we see our “affordable” town growing with opportunity, & younger generations staying in Bakersfield to make a positive difference. I’m super optimistic these days that there is great change on the horizon!
