Meet Alisa Wyatt of Pilatesology.com in Hermosa Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Wyatt.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’d been a Pilates Instructor for over 10 years when my husband (who was a travel photographer) and I decided to make dvd workouts for my clients. This was back in the early 2000s and a friend who worked at Ask.com laughed when we told him we were making dvds because as he said, dvds were going extinct. He was right but we went ahead and made dvds anyway. We did that for several years and that process served as a great learning tool for what we do now.

Creating Pilatesology.com was the next step and a much bigger venture. We have over 1000 videos and more than 30 teachers. We’re incredibly honored to have several legends of Pilates exclusively teaching on Pilatesology, including Jay Grimes, Cary Regan, Anthony Rabara, and Dorothee Vandewalle.

Pilatesology is a place where anyone can find Pilates workouts from brand new beginner to super advanced, using nothing but a mat, all the way to the most esoteric Pilates apparatus (Reformer to toe corrector–we’ve got it.). We’re also one of the most sought after resources on the internet for teachers seeking to learn more about the original Pilates method.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have struggled to remain a small business; the feeling is that you have to grow really fast and one of our priorities is quality of life as opposed to a bigger operation. Having time to enjoy what you do in the age of information overload is hard!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pilatesology.com – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We’re known for Pilates that’s true to what Joseph Pilates taught.

What you see on Pilatesology.com (and what’s taught in our Hermosa Beach studio) is a super effective, body corrective method that promotes athleticism and longevity. We have clients who range from young athletes to thriving 90 year olds.

Pilates in its original style is a disciplined practice that requires mental focus which I think is desperately needed in our society. Having a time each day dedicated to being present in your body is the best anti-aging medicine!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are currently at work adding to our global reach with the possibility of watching classes in other languages. There is scant knowledge of the original Pilates method in countries outside of the U.S. and we hear from people who are isolated and want to learn more.

We also feel lucky to have visiting teachers at our studio from all over the world, both taking lessons and teaching workshops.
