Meet Alice Raibon of Social Workout Studio in Chatsworth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Raibon.

Alice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I initially got into fitness due to complications from diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure that claimed the lives of both my parents and sibling. Due to their untimely deaths and the fact that I knew those ailments are hereditary, I got serious about my health, fitness and wellbeing. Determined to live a different life style and have a better quality of life, I started exploring nutrition and taking fitness courses. Although I majored in business, I found myself taking numerous physical education classes and seminars. I finished my degree in business and relocated to California shortly after. Once I adapted to my life in LA, I became extremely interested in fitness. It’s as if it just grabbed a hold of me and wouldn’t let me go! I started working out every day while helping my family and friends meet their fitness goals. Soon after, I met the general manager of Bally Total Fitness who encouraged me to become a certified personal trainer. His words were “you’re a walking billboard and everybody would want to train with you”. So, with that encouragement, I became certified with AFAA. I then started training at Bally Total Fitness and also competed as an NPC figure competitor.

I competed for over 4 years and placed 1st and 3rd in some of the shows. I was a natural. I’d found my niche within fitness and I loved it! I juggled two jobs while competing and training at the same time. My first job was training others and myself. My second job was at a 5-star restaurant. Still not completely sure that I could make a good living off personal training alone, I juggled those jobs until I was completely burned out and exhausted. One day my manager at the restaurant encouraged me to take a chance on myself and focus on my career in fitness whole heartedly. He implied that he could tell I had a passion for fitness. He reassured me that if I needed to come back, he’d always have a place for me. I then started personal training full time at corporate gym’s, private fitness studios and in home clients. Needless to say, mama was busy, super busy. Juggling three different locations and not being able to take on any new clients, I had an epiphany! It dawned on me that I should open my own facility. With my background in business, my certification in fitness and nutrition along with years of experience in the fitness industry I knew I was ready. I opened my own private fitness studio named Social Workout Studio in 2011 located in Chatsworth, Ca. That was the proudest day in my life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel my journey has been a smooth transition. I am surrounded by great people who encourage and help me along the way. I am sometimes my worse critic and therefore, at times I struggle with believing in myself wholeheartedly. However, I always push past that thought and focus on the importance of how my work and life serves others. That gives me confidence, gratitude and keeps me lifted.

I’m most proud of Social Workout Studio because I made a decision to start this company when the economy was on the down slide. We’ve been in business for 6 years now, and I have a great team of trainers working alongside me. I’m an African-American female, the founder and CEO of Social Workout Studio in Chatsworth, California. Now that’s amazing! What sets us apart is that we’re a one stop shop offering: muscle and strength building, endurance and stamina, weight loss, body sculpting, rehabilitation flexibility, core training, TRX, Pilates, senior fitness and kids fitness. The studio is inviting, clean, bright, friendly and has positive energy.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood would be competing against my brother to see who could run the fastest in sixty seconds. Of course, with me being the youngest in the family and him being older and faster he would always win the race. But I never stopped competing against him and I never gave up. Today I have two marathons and two half marathons under my belt and I can beat my brother in any race!!
