Hi Aleya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My background is in corporate foodservice and I’ve had the pleasure of some pretty glamorous experiences, including serving as a private chef for some A-list celebrities I’m not allowed to name (thanks, NDAs!).
But my empire-building journey? Well, that started out on less-than-glamorous footing: I was laid off from a corporate job that I’d been at for several years.
Cue the self-doubt and Japanese whisky.
Fortunately, the grieving stage didn’t last long (although Japanese whisky is still my drink of choice). I put my big girl pants on and decided to view my experience as an exciting new chapter. This was my chance to pursue entrepreneurship — an opportunity I had considered for years!
So, I did just that. I reflected on my strengths, my passions, my values, and my personal goals — and, out of those soul-searching sessions, Flourish Marketing was born. Did I have all the answers? Not in the slightest. But something inside me clicked and I knew I was on the right path to follow my heart’s purpose. (Turns out that was my intuition warming up its voice after many years of dormancy in the corporate world!)
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not! I don’t think many entrepreneurs can say their empire-building journey has been smooth — but I know most would agree that it’s a rewarding experience nonetheless.
Like many, I faced villains on my hero’s journey — and, like many, most of those villains turned out to be my own insecurities and perceptions of money, time, and self-worth. I had years of marketing experience but had no experience building (and maintaining) a successful marketing firm.
Also like many entrepreneurs, I’ve struggled with the desire to do more than necessary. It’s easy to look around and see all of the cool things that others are doing in your market, but that’s not to say that every shiny object is a good fit for you! This is something I still work on to this day and, with the help of a team that is quick to say “slow your roll, Aleya,” I’m finding and appreciating the beauty and abundance that lies in simplicity.
