Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Renee.
Hi Alexis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a child, I always looked for a way to express myself and to connect with people. I wanted a way to share my experiences with people in hopes that they could learn from them. I remember reading books from Maya Angelou and fell in love with how she taught through her words. It inspired me to start documenting things in diaries, poems and short stories. Then I found music. It allowed me to do it my own way. So I started singing at church as a kid (as most of us young black artists do). I was born in a small town in Oklahoma called Muskogee. It was slow-paced, a lot of low-income families and straight country. But it was home. I eventually moved to Tulsa, OK (home of Black Wallstreet and the 1921 Tulsa race riots). I grew up there and have created most of my memories there. I started my music career in Tulsa and that’s usually where people say that I’m from, which is what I represent just as much as the place I was born. I was able to do a lot of the bigger arena shows as they came through the state, 106&park freestyle Friday all while living in Oklahoma I felt like I needed to move to Atlanta to further my career.
Shortly after I moved to Atlanta, my mother and sister moved here as well and helped make Atlanta feel a little more like home until my mother’s untimely passing to cancer in 2016. Since living in Atlanta, I’ve most recently landed my song “Racks” on the new nba2k21 video game and signing a distribution deal with Empire in 2017. I’ve worked with BET by landing two songs on the Boomerang 2 tv show, one song on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and two more on Step up 2: Highwater with LionsGate. One of the most exciting things that has happened to date was getting the recognition of Timbaland who had begun posting me to his IG last year and brought me onboard to be apart of his brand BEATCLUB as a founding member. My new single “Playing Games” will be releasing February 19th and will be available on all platforms.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Coming from a hard-working family in a small town in Oklahoma, I didn’t know anything about the music business, studios, how to record, etc. I didn’t have anyone to teach how to do things when I started out. So I had to build it from the ground up, which is hard. It took a little longer to figure things out or to do things the right way but I’m glad that I was put in a position to learn to do a lot of things because now I know so much more than just how to be an artist.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Everyone has something very special about themselves. I think the more that we tap into the things that we’ve experienced and have witnessed, it makes our story unique. So I try to focus on things that have changed my life. That’s what makes you relatable, but unique. I try to hit that mark every time.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned that it’s always best to plan and put your best forward with everything. You don’t really have time to half-ass your way through things because you’ll always have to circle back and fix things. And BE ON TIME.
