Meet Alexa Kaul Dodson of Lexa Studio in Eagle Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Kaul Dodson.

Alexa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began creating at an extremely young age. My mother tells stories of me as a two years old, sitting quietly and drawing for hours. I studied art in and out of school as well as assisted a local artist in my community. While I questioned my abilities and struggled to define my artistic style it remained a passion of mine.

I was unsure if I would be able to pursue a career in fine art outside of teaching so I went to university to study graphic design. One negative experience in the program led me to change trajectory entirely. I took a break from studying art in school and pursued a career in entertainment.

For several years I worked in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. Around my engagement in 2012, I was encouraged to create hand-painted invitations and personalized accents for my upcoming wedding. This is what lit the fire and Lexa Studio was born.

Lexa Studio remained a side gig up until my husband and I moved to Seoul, South Korea for a work opportunity. Our time abroad is where I was really able to focus on developing my brand and artistic style. Seoul is such an inspiring creative city— bursting at the seams with design. I truly feel that our move abroad was integral in honing my craft.

Now, we have returned home to Los Angeles where I continue to strive towards establishing my brand. Lexa Studio specializes in bespoke paper goods and fine art. I am currently creating fine art and illustration as well as exploring new mediums and techniques that I can incorporate into my work.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are many ups and downs. I am fortunate in that creating comes easily to me but I am less comfortable promoting myself and my work. It can be difficult to put yourself out there and I may have missed opportunities because of this. I also struggle with the business side of art. I often worry that I don’t know how to execute an idea efficiently but I have been working to educate myself to learn how I can better grow my brand.

Please tell us about Lexa Studio.
Lexa Studio is an art and design brand featuring hand made paper goods and fine art.

My unique wedding invitations and paper goods feature all original art and design. I believe that small personal details can add something special to any party or event and I work closely with my clients to create an ambiance tailored specifically to their needs.

My fine art features my interpretation of various nature-based forms. My style is ever-evolving, though I often get lost in my creations. I find I am more interested in the relationships of overlapping shapes and colors rather than their original form. I feel that my pieces are chaotic and whimsical, inspired heavily by my experience living abroad. It took many years to be comfortable with this looser form of watercolor.

At Lexa Studio, I have the privilege to work closely with clients and create artwork personal to them. Whether I’m creating art that will hang in their home or designing invitations that will set the tone of their wedding, I am most proud when the end result comes together and they can see their vision come to life.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I believe that my art and design is heavily influenced by my travels. Growing up, I was lucky to have two journalists for parents who had worked and lived abroad and deeply valued the importance of travel. My favorite childhood memories are those in which we were able to travel together, visit a new city, experience the culture, and see the local museums and art.
