Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Weber.
Alex, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I am a Motivational Comedian, and usually when I say that to people they immediately ask “What that heck is a Motivational Comedian?” Which is definitely a fair question! In practice, my job is a Speaker and Host. I speak to and work with Organizations, Companies, and Universities on Positive Leadership and Performance. I’ve also been an award-winning Host with NBC American Ninja Warrior, Under Armour, Discovery Channel, and FX.
My Grad School though was coaching high school lacrosse. It was supposed to be my “side job” when I moved to Los Angeles, but it quickly became all I cared about. Working with the High Schoolers in that microcosm of a sports field was everything to me and beyond impactful. Before I took over, the team had never won a playoff game. In my first year as Head Coach, we won the Los Angeles Championship, and I was awarded US Lacrosse Coach of the Year. But more than anything, it validated to me that we can be positive and have fun, all while believing in ourselves, doing our best, and accomplishing our goals.
Has it been a smooth road?
Oh gosh no!! My senior year at Penn I had a life-altering moment. It wasn’t a change of heart, but more of listening to my heart. I stayed up late with some close friends, and we made a make-shift, sketchy campfire in our dirt patch of a backyard, and we just talked about life. In all my schooling and education, it was the only moment in my entire life I’d actually picked my head up from my current life and asked myself “What do I want to do with my moments on earth?” Which I think is the most honest thing we can ever ask ourselves.
That night I wrote down my answer. The next morning I woke up, read what I wrote, and changed my life at that moment. I left Finance, and started Performing. What I wrote was “Follow Your Fire.” Whatever gets our heart racing and beating, and makes us want to go and do it! I promised myself I’d always go all-in on that, and I’m thankful to say I’ve honored that since.
A huge part of my fire now is encouraging people to go for what they really want because that’s when all the good stuff happens.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Currently I host different Series, and Speak at Organizations on overcoming failure to achieve our goals
American Ninja Warrior was such a tangible learning experience for that. I failed at American Ninja Warrior more than anything else in my entire life, so to finally progress and succeed at challenges really meant a lot. We also won best digital series, which was super cool, and then… we wrapped! We went out on a high note, but it was a sudden stop. And I was heart-broken. I loved doing it, and I remember driving back from the final meeting at NBC, and I had that nauseous, sick to my stomach feeling.
But I asked myself “what do I want to do with my moments on earth?” And it is doing what I’m doing now. Using Motivational Comedy as a tool to impact and lift people up. I’m thankful for the Series wrapping because if it hadn’t ended, I wouldn’t have been pushed to go after what I am doing now.
As life would have it, currently I’m training to compete in this season of American Ninja Warrior. Life is a cool thing, and if we’re talking about following our Fires, American Ninja Warrior certainly lights me up!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Venice, CA. I think it’s this unique blend of creatives, entrepreneurs, people who are spiritual, and then also really athletic! That’s definitely a combo I’m into, and plus there are really good tacos, so that’s a win!
