Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Urosevich.
Alex, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Basketball has always been an important staple in my life. It has been the one outlet I can channel to ease my mind, body, and soul. Ever since I was young enough to pick up a ball, basketball was always going to be in my life, whether as a player or a coach. I began coaching youth basketball after playing for 25 years as a kid and into high school where I played 2 years overseas after I graduated high school. I was looking to create a program to allow kids to get off the video games and off the street and work out their aggression and anxiety through the game of basketball. I want to cultivate young men and women into great citizens, on and off the court. I notice too many programs in the Valley charge an arm and a leg for training and to make things worse, they don’t emphasize the basics, the fundamentals. A lot of programs design their training regimen to “appear” busy and go through the motions so kids can look like they’re learning when in actuality they’re not learning what they’re supposed to be learning. I wanted my players to understand how to play the game correctly, with passion, respect, and understanding of the game. I could easily create 20 different drills and waste 2 hours of training, while parents are shelling out $200 per month just for training, but it doesn’t give me the satisfaction knowing that these kids are cutting corners. This is where the Los Angeles Basketball League was created. To get back to the basics. How you practice is a reflection of how you play. How you study at home, is how you perform at school. It works in all aspects of like and that is my main goal. To provide guidance to at least 1 kid that will listen and take the direction I am trying to have them head towards. I take pride in my training and my passion reflects onto my kids.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with any business, you will face challenges and obstacles. Commitment is key. If you have a group of kids and parents who are committed to getting better and focusing, then it becomes an easy road. You will have kids that commit for a few months, then lose interest because it becomes harder and harder to get better and better. Most kids do not want to be pushed to their limits, instead, they want to do the bare minimum just to get by. It’s been a long journey, but the process never stops. You will gain and lose players, but the plan is always the same. keep pushing to get better and stronger each day.
