Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Richardson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alex. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like most, I moved to Los Angeles in hopes of fame and fortune lol. I found myself on many Hollywood sets as an extra (goodness!). I met someone with a pretty cool camera and was inspired to purchase one of my own. It was a 5-megapixel point and shoot camera by sony. I brought that thing with me everywhere. I ended up putting that little beast away and got a real job. I lost all ambition to learn and pursue photography. 10 years must have gone by until I got an itch. I was sick of working a regular job. I asked a dear friend of mine if I could borrow his Canon 10d. I started posting craigslist ads offering $99 headshots all whilst not having a clue on how to use the damn thing. From there, one thing led to another and here I am today photographing people on their very best day. (and yes, I now know how to use a camera)
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
So far so good, however it definitely has not been a smooth road. So much trial and error. So many things to learn. Reality hits when you quit your day job and your savings runs low. Wow that was stressful. A big struggle was to ignore people’s negative remarks about the photography industry. How it’s oversaturated and how “everyone” is a photographer.
Alexander Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a busy full time wedding photographer. I could never in a million years believe I would end up shooting weddings. I always thought wedding photography was cheesy. I developed my own style which I find is pretty different from most traditional wedding photographers. I shoot for mood, highlights and dark shadows with a touch of California’s golden tones. I don’t pose people. I encourage and allow people to be on fire for each other and I just capture the magic they present.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is happiness. You can be a multi-millionaire yet still broken because of the lack of happiness. I can honestly say I am truly blessed because I am extremely happy with life. I am not a multi-millionaire, but I have a loving wife and the sweetest baby boy in the world. There are other goals and markers I will always reach for but right now the I’m on cloud 9.
