Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Fox.
Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m 32 years old and grew up in a small Wisconsin town. When I turned 19, I decided to move to California and pursue my passion in photography and film. I spent two years at the Los Angeles film school before landing a job in the motorcycle industry for photography. This job was a great kickstart to really get the ball rolling. I hopped around a handful of other industry jobs throughout the years until I finally found my niche. All these experiences in the industry through networking, attending trade shows, rallies, races really opened up my circle. I got to the point where I was ready to stop answering to the man and create my own destiny. I knew the direction I wanted to go, the product line I wanted to create, and the right people to help me achieve that. SLYFOX Performance emerged as a brand in late 2018. At SLYFOX, we manufacture aftermarket performance upgrade parts for Harley Davidsons.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has had its ups and downs. In the beginning, I was wearing multiple shoes, many sleepless nights, and making sure everything was in order. It’s like nurturing a young child, you need to make sure that child has what it needs in order to grow. It takes time, but eventually, things get easier. Once I was able to generate enough money, I was able to bring in outside help to take certain tasks off my plate. My main focus is our product line, what new products we are going to bring to market, and where the trends are going. I’m now able to focus more on that with a small team growing.
The pandemic was a double edge sword for us. Building motorcycles in your garage and riding them makes for a great social distancing activity. Demand for aftermarket parts exploded, however, manufacturing slowed down and we could not fill the demand for many months. Materials became more sparse and costs went up, finding workers also became very difficult. It was an interesting time, but we were able to eventually climb over that hill.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
SLYFOX is a business that manufactures aftermarket parts for Harley Davidson motorcycles. SLYFOX started in late 2018 and is shy of being four years old. I’m the founder and specialize in product development and research and development for the line. We are known for providing the motorcycle industry top-notch performance upgrades that cover the whole spectrum of the motorcycle. We have seats, exhaust, handlebar risers, carbon fiber bodywork and many other upgrades. We are proud to have a wide variety of parts to offer other than being specific to one type of part or genre. We are heavily involved in the Harley road racing side of things as well. We pride ourselves in being more than just a brand, but a lifestyle.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’d say good luck has been on our side. Every logistical move we have made happens to fall in place right at the perfect time. Performance has always been a trend but has gone from one spectrum to another, especially with the younger generation of Harley rider. We tend to those performance customers and have been able to capitalize on that with our product line. Harleys are great bikes off the showroom floor, but are built for more casual riding and cruising. Our parts allow for these bikes to be pushed to the limit.
One thing that really put our brand on the map, was the first ever Harley bagger road race. Slyfox amongst 12 other teams, were invited to participate. We built a bike and had a top 5 finish against some heavy hitter companies within the industry. Hours after going live this race generated millions of views. Harley road racing has been huge for the brand and we will continue to race the circuit.
