Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Dunn.
Alex, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always have had a love for movies and film because of my Dad who had an impressive collection of movies that he bought over the years. I was able to benefit off of that and watch all different kinds of cinema through him. It just seemed right that at some point I would venture into filmmaking itself.
My journey into filmmaking began at Pasadena City College. I took film classes there and during my time in their program realized my love for cinematography. I kind of took an unconventional route after that because of being denied by UCLA for their film school. I began working full time at a rental house, On The Mark, and doing freelancing on a vast array of projects. I built my skills through freelancing and knowledge of gear at the rental house making it a perfect combination to help my cinematography.
While I was at Pasadena City College I met a lot of my current collaborators including the other half of Outer Heaven Creations, V. Moses Navarro. We built a good relationship there and it continued outside of school as well. We eventually felt it was time to be more proactive with our filmmaking and start the company.
Has it been a smooth road?
I guess in short no. However, our company is still in such an infantile stage though and any of the rough patches aren’t anything that is major. Mainly we are just trying to figure out our identity, find a steady stream of clientele, and maintain our image of quality work along the way, which I think any company just starting out has to go through.
Please tell us about Outer Heaven Creations.
Outer Heaven Creations is a full-blown production house that creates content from inception to delivery of the product. We currently double as both agency and production company. Currently, most of our work has been in Music Videos but our goal is branch out into other fields. We are currently tackling the commercial, fashion and narrative parts of filmmaking too and would love to be making features in the next few years.
I am proud of Outer Heaven for being a company that has an amazingly diverse group of artists. Every one of the people on our team has come from some different background and it really makes the work diverse. We always strive for quality work but we also always strive for having different stories that may in other circumstances not get the chance to be told.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is kind of a double edge sword. There is a lot of work but there is also an incredible amount of competition so you are constantly competing against others for the same work and it is a bidders market. I think everyone is trying to find the best deal more than the best work sometimes so it can be kind of stifling. Instead of supporting each other sometimes companies are kind of out to for themselves but I suppose that is business.
That being said if you can make it in Los Angeles as a production company you have really made it. There are some other great cities for filmmaking but nothing with the prestige of Los Angeles. That challenge kind of fuels us to always give our best work.
