The Study Hut Tutoring Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Berg, Sean Patrick Burke and Rob Stone.

Study Hut Tutoring was born from the vision of owners Sean Patrick Burke and Rob Stone, both alumni of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. Rob and Sean Patrick imagined building the type of resource that they wished had been accessible to them when they were working through school, and this is precisely what they have achieved. With the help of friends and local braniacs, Study Hut tutoring opened doors in Manhattan Beach in 2006, and has steadily grown since then, now operating four locations in the South Bay, and one location in Newport Beach.

Study Hut cultivates a studious and objective-driven environment, while incorporating a unique take on our local beach culture. Study Hut has had the privilege of helping thousands of local students improve their academic performance and achieve their goals, be them excelling in a specific class, improving their understanding of advanced mathematics, nailing a top score on the SAT/ACT, or achieving acceptance to the university of their choice. As we continue to engage with the young minds of the South Bay, Study Hut feels proud and fortunate to serve our wonderful community.

Has it been a smooth road?
Growing a business in the South Bay is a multi-faceted challenge. We emphasize the importance of consistent and high quality service, and regularly speak with our clients to improve their experience with Study Hut.

Just as we advise our students, there are no shortcuts to success. The growth of Study Hut can be attributed to hard work, commitment to our students, determination to always find ways to improve, and the support of our community.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Study Hut Tutoring story. Tell us more about the business.
Study Hut Tutoring offers a variety of services rooted in one-on-one academic tutoring. Our students vary in level from kindergarten to college, and we tailor our services to meet the precise needs of each student.

Our base service is subject tutoring, which caters directly to the curriculum that the student is working with in school. This service can include homework help, concept enrichment, study techniques, and preparing for upcoming exams. Other students come to Study Hut for test preparation tutoring, with the SAT and ACT being the most popular tests. This service walks students through a comprehensive breakdown of the specific test, covering concepts and strategic test taking. Additionally, we have students who work with Study Hut tutors to research colleges, complete college applications and write personal statements.

Tutoring with Study Hut is more than just a one hour session. We strive to equip our students for success outside of Study Hut by teaching them organization, planer keeping, task prioritization and time allocation. Our goal is to help each of our students achieve to their highest potential, and to take pride in their success.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The popularity and accessibility of one-on-one tutoring is growing, and will continue to grow, in the years to come. While new options for tutoring come and go, we find that nothing is as effective in producing academic improvement as one-on-one tutoring, and we look forward to continue to serve the South Bay in the years to come.
