Today we’d like to introduce you to Albert Segoviano.
Albert, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a child, I always was amazed at pictures from books and magazines (National Geographic and lowrider magazines). However growing up in poverty, I never had the opportunity to own or use cameras. If I did, it would be using a camera from a family member to shoot family pictures. I knew then I liked taking pictures but made nothing of it. As technology evolved, I starting seeing a lot more pictures of things I liked (neighborhoods, community, culture, lowriders and classic cars) via social media. That sparked my interest. In 2013, I purchased my first semi-professional camera. I started shooting everything from my neighborhood to Downtown LA. While shooting, I started learning more about photography and wanted to take it to the next level. It was then when I decided to purchase my second camera, a Nikon DSLR.
At that point, I started learning about how to shoot manual pictures and long exposure pictures. I began shooting rooftops, abandoned places, and car shows. As well as learning a bit about street photography. This got my adrenaline going and was shooting day and night. I was scouting for new locations and different angles. During this time, I was able to participate in a photo gallery with various photographers. My interest for photography got even bigger from all the inspiration. Thereafter, I knew it was time to upgrade my equipment. In 2019, I purchased my third camera, a full-frame. I continued to shoot everyday and collaborate with other photographers. At the same time, via social media (Instagram) I began selling prints and networking for photoshoots.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In 2015, I was arrested for trespassing. I wanted to climb a crane in order to capture a picture I had envisioned. The pictures were well worth the risk. Also in 2018, I got injured from climbing a fence trying to get into an abandoned jail. I did end up in the hospital with minor injuries. Again, well worth it and no regrets.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I can really capture the essence of everyday life in the communities of East Los Angeles. Being an Angeleno allows me to capture everything and is what sets me apart from most. I am most known for finding new locations that no one has captured before.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My greatest supporter with my photography is my amazing girlfriend. She inspires me to think out of the box and plays a part into editing photos with me. At the same time, has put up with late night shooting and sometimes risky captures. But always caring and devoted to support my passion.
