Meet Alan Palmer of Definitely Dickens Holiday Carolers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Palmer.

The company was started by Crystal Barron who with her husband Chris who wrote some beautiful and interestingly new arrangements that have been hailed as some of the best in the caroling industry. The company was founded in 1999 and has quartets performing throughout the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It is a difficult task keeping nearly 30 singers memorized and up to date on the nearly 80 carolers in our music repertoire, building costumes for that many carolers, and finding the clients for the quartets that we have in our company.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are one of the few caroling companies who have our entire repertoire memorized. We do not carry books. We are also one of very few groups who have incredible jazz arrangements, completely new and humorous arrangements and of course the beautiful standard arrangements. Most written by Chris and Crystal Barron and some written by current and former singers with the group. All of our singers are professional singers who for the most part make their living singing. Some have appeared on Broadway, film, and local theaters throughout the United States. Our handmade costumes make our look stand out for other quartets as well. People always know our quartets are quality and worth every penny spent.

What were you like growing up?
My mother says I sang coming out of the womb. There hasn’t been a day that music hasn’t played a huge part of my life. My father built me a stage in our basement so that I could put on shows for my friends and family. I started a company and taught disco at the age of 13 to high school students. We were called A Touch of Class. We would go to rest homes in the area and perform for them. I guess that taught me how to be a leaded and how to run a business. After 10 years singing with Definitely Dickens, I always treated this company as if it were my own in making sure the look and sound was exactly what Crystal had envisioned. She came to appreciate that and asked me to manage the company. We work so well together and I am so glad to take the company to the next level.
