Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha M. Dioum
Hi Aisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m from Inglewood CA. All my schooling was in LA. I attended La Tijera Elementary, Westchester High and Long Beach State and was a student athlete from Junior High to University in Track and Field and Volleyball. When I was young, I was very interested in different languages and cultures. I was able to learn to speak Spanish in High School, and from there went on to immerse myself in the Central American, Caribbean and Afro-Latin cultures of LA. I got my BA in Spanish Interpreting and I was all set to become a Medical & Court Interpreter when a friend of the familty suggested that I go into Social Services since I was bilingual and LA County was hiring. I started out at a Welfare case worker and in about 12 years time I was an Administrator. 2020 I decided to retire at age 38 after 15 years of service and pursue a healthier stress-free life abroad with my then family of 3. Fast-forward 3.5 years later, my family of 4 and I are living mortgage/rent-free in our 6 bedroom home in Senegal, West Africa, and have started several small businesses. One of which entails showing others how to do the same.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. My husband being from Senegal helps a lot, but also I tend to feel culturally isolated at times. Sometiems I may want to talk to someone about an American celebrity that passed or a current hip hop song that just dropped, but no one can quite relate like someone from the soil. While I am fluent in French, there are sometimes I get frustrated ed when trying to communicate. There are a lot of things that workout better than what we initially planned, however there are projects that didn’t turn out so well, and a few goals that have been delayed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We offer relocating and construction consulting for people interested in relocating to Africa, specifically Senegal. We also offer a full range of services pertaining to Real Estate, Land Purchasing, Water Drilling, and Construction. What sets us apart from others who offer similar services is that we did all of this for ourselves and learned the process for ourselves. Our main focus is community building and that’s what motivates us to do what we do. We are essentially building and assisting our future neighbours.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Put your health and happiness first, and your passion will produce that which is intended for you.
