Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha Gibbs.
Aisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started dancing at the age of 12 and fell in love with the art. Through my high school years, I competed on the song team while competing at my studio west coast school of the arts. During my last year of high school, I began to assist at the studio teaching classes and choreographing numbers. It was then that I knew I wanted teaching and choreographing to be my career. I have been teaching for 12 years now and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My one obstacle was when my parents passed. Being the oldest sibling brings on major responsibilities. My main task was to make sure my sisters were secured and make my parents proud.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
At both studios Impact Dance Center and Elements Dance Space, I specialize in teaching/choreographing ages 8-18. I think the two things I’m known for are my hair and my shoe collection. The one thing I most proud of is being able to be apart of these kids lives making a difference in a positive way. The love and happiness they bring me makes my job feel like less of a job day in and day out.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I give credit to my mom Carolyn Hinson Gibbs and my sisters Eshe Gibbs and Angel Gibbs. My mom started this whole dance scene for us and believed in us from jump. My sisters have always been my cheerleaders in the audience, behind the photographer, or even right beside me. They keep me going no matter what the situation is.
