Meet Aileen Kelly and Felicia Kashevaroff of Persistiny in South Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aileen Kelly and Felicia Kashevaroff.

Aileen and Felicia have been friends for a REALLY. LONG. TIME. Over 35 years. We’ve also spent a good portion of our adult lives caring for our families as stay at home moms. As our children got older, we started to talk about what came next. It felt wrong to us that the work we had done over the years wasn’t relevant to our careers. Motherhood requires tenacity, flexibility, and resilience. Why couldn’t we apply the skills we’d gained as mothers in the workplace? What would it have looked like if we had tracked our work overtime? What would it look like if millions of women did the same? So we built an app that does just that. Tend: Task Manager and Journal quantifies and values the invisible workload of motherhood.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well…no one has had a smooth road for the past month or so. Building our business has had its ups and downs but our friendship has smoothed over most of the worst bumps and bruises. When things have gone sideways, it has helped to have someone who always gives you the benefit of the doubt and knows that you are trying just as hard as they are. We’ve found that the uncertainty of motherhood has prepared us for the ongoing uncertainty of entrepreneurship. We believe in what we are doing and that helps us keep going, especially now when it can be hard to stay focused.

Please tell us about Persistiny.
Persistiny built a platform of support where parents can track, value, share and leverage the unpaid work they do each day to care for their families. The “Mental Load” is the invisible work required to keep a family running smoothly – doctor’s appointments, homework, after school activities, household administration – the list is endless. Studies show that the overwhelming majority of this work falls on women. An unequal division of household labor contributes to poor maternal mental health, destroys relationships, and is the primary driver of the gender wage gap. Our solution? Tend: Task Manager & Journal, a mobile app that offers women a unique, simple interface to track and value their caregiving work. Tend lightens the mental load carried by mothers and gives them a place to quantify the economic value of their work. We’re the only company that offers a data-driven solution to a problem millions of women are living with everyday.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Aileen: When I was a kid, we would ride our bikes around the neighborhood with a small transistor radio blaring horrible 80’s music. It was the best.

Felicia: Going to the community pool with Aileen to giggle and flirt with the cute lifeguards.
