Meet Adrein Horan of AWALthe1ST Design in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrein Horan.

Adrein, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I officially started my design journey at Cal State Fullerton in 2008, I had initially wanted to become an illustrator but decided to focus on graphic design because there were more job opportunities. After graduating from college, I started working for a design agency in LA creating social media campaigns, merch, logos, etc. for influencers and musical artists. After leaving that position after almost three years, I worked for iGo.Live, a live streaming app based in Beverly Hills, where I created graphics and assets for the app as well as social media content. While working for iGo.Live I took a job offer from the company ZipRecruiter as the designer for their Sports Partnerships Department. While at ZipRecruiter, I began doing freelance work on the side for music artists and record labels. I continued working at ZipRecruiter until the COVID crisis occurred where I was put on furlough and decided to make freelance more permanent.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has overall been a great experience with really high points as well as low points. I definitely have struggled at times in my work years due to not finding enough work or being underpaid and undervalued, but through it all, you have to stay determined. I also feel as if the struggles have only made me stronger and more knowledgeable about how to not be in those certain situations again.

AWALthe1ST Design – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business specializes in delivering most graphic needs from logos and motion graphics, to clothing designs and social media content.  My design style centers around futuristic themes with vintage appeal that references pop culture, anime, and music. What I’m most proud of about my business is that through hard work and promotion my list of clients has grown exponentially, which has kept me busy. What sets my business apart from others is the creative thinking and quality of the product we deliver with everything that’s sent out looking and feeling original.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moments in my career that I look fondly on are all the times when I was working late at night and thinking if the hard work and the time I was putting in was worth it. I can now look fondly back at these times because now I know they were definitely were.
