Meet Adam Johan and David Luca of Joluca in Los Feliz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Johan and David Luca.

Adam and David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The two of us met when we joined Night Vision; a collective of house music nerds in our hometown of Edmonton, Canada. Before Adam moved to LA, we spent our time throwing shows and bringing some of our favorite producers and DJs to town. The artists we met and the friends made along the way are what gave us the inspiration to start working on music together as Joluca (a portmanteau of our middle names, Johan and Luca).

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no! As collaborators, we get along great and have mostly cruised through the project but the last two years have been both a challenge and a blessing as we have had to take Joluca long-distance when Adam moved to LA in September 2017. There’s been more opportunity than ever before but, of course, not being able to spend time together in the studio adds a layer of difficulty to our process. We’ve since figured out a workflow that works for us and going to keep at it until we can get David stateside.

Joluca – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We love using hardware synths and outboard effects to get interesting sounds into our tracks. Goofing around the studio and making tracks out of happy accidents is a big part of our flow. Once we’re further into the process, the level of detail in some of our songs can drive us bonkers, but we actually love taking time to tweak things until they’re just right. We’re still figuring out our sound but everything so far has felt like an honest expression of who we are as both DJs and party people. We’re proud of that.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing our tracks picked up by labels we love has been, and continues to be, one of the coolest things for us but playing Bass Coast is definitely the thing we’re most proud of.
