Today we’d like to introduce you to Ace (Jing) Wang.
Hi Ace (Jing), so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had a passion for filmmaking and it feels like it was meant to be. I was born in Guangzhou, China, which is very close to Hong Kong, and coincidentally shared the same name as a well-known Hong Kong film director, Jing Wang. As a result, my peers would often call me “Director Wang,” but I didn’t mind. I was excited about the idea of one-day making movies. My first experience with editing was in high school when my brother asked me to help him edit a memory video for his girlfriend. I loved the process of choosing music and crafting a narrative to tell their story. After applying to Columbia College Chicago and learning more about film, I realized that it’s a collaborative effort and editing was my calling.
After graduating, I interned at Legendary Pictures, where I gained exposure to the post-production process of Hollywood films. Although I was taking on commercial jobs, I knew that I wanted to edit feature films. So, I applied to the American Film Institute and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Here, I met great people and further developed my skills as a film editor.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road for me. I used to think that being a successful film editor was all about technical skills like software and cool effects. However, I soon learned that storytelling is the most important skill for an editor. There was a time when I struggled to convey emotion through my work and my stories lacked the depth and resonance that they needed. This was difficult to face, as I knew that I wasn’t connecting with my audience. I had to learn that the key to success as an editor was not just technical ability but also the ability to tell a compelling story that resonates with viewers. It was a valuable lesson, but it wasn’t always easy to learn.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have edited and delivered over 30 projects for major clients such as Netflix, Electronic Arts, and ByteDance. I have managed projects and created strategies to grow followers for celebrities, including Akon, FoodGod, and Maggie Q, and Steve Aoki. My experience has taught me to be efficient, detail-oriented and to prioritize tasks in order to meet tight deadlines. I am proficient in Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer and have experience with Adobe After Effects, as well as designing motion graphics, green screens and creating captions.
In addition, I am currently studying film editing at the American Film Institute and hold a degree in Cinema Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I am passionate about the latest trends in film and have a strong awareness of the industry.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Always remember love and kindness is free.
