Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Guziewicz
Hi Abigail, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey with Velvet Moon began in the summer of 2021 when I was preparing to move from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles for a year of service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. As part of the program, I could only bring what I needed in two suitcases, which led me to reflect on the excess clothing I had accumulated over the years, including many hand-me-downs from my sisters. I couldn’t stand the thought of these pieces going to waste, especially because I believe each item of clothing carries its own unique energy and story. I wanted to treat them with respect and ensure they didn’t just sit unused, so I decided to repurpose them into something new and meaningful.
This led to the birth of Velvet Moon. What began as selling secondhand clothes online quickly evolved into a creative endeavor centered on upcycling and transforming vintage textiles into one-of-a-kind wearable art. Velvet Moon became my way of directly responding to the waste and overproduction of the fast fashion industry. Instead of contributing to that cycle, I embraced slow fashion, reimagining discarded materials into something beautiful and purposeful. Today, Velvet Moon continues to grow, with a commitment to sustainability, creativity, and offering a thoughtful alternative to disposable fashion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to Velvet Moon hasn’t always been smooth. Starting a business focused on sustainability in an industry driven by fast fashion came with its challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been managing the balance between creative passion and the realities of running a business. There have been times when I had to learn the hard way about time management, inventory, and finances, especially in the early days when I was juggling everything myself.
The wildfires in California also disrupted my work, forcing me to pause and reevaluate how I could continue to connect with my community while navigating uncertainty. This led to the creation of a weekly sewing circle, which has turned into a beautiful and unexpected source of community and creativity. Though these obstacles have been difficult, they’ve also taught me resilience and the importance of staying true to my values. Velvet Moon has grown out of these challenges, and I’ve learned that the journey isn’t just about success—it’s about how you navigate the hard times and keep moving forward with purpose.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Velvet Moon?
Velvet Moon is a sustainable fashion brand that specializes in upcycling and repurposing vintage textiles, old garments, and discarded fabrics into one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces. What sets Velvet Moon apart is our deep commitment to sustainability, creativity, and the art of transformation. Instead of contributing to the waste caused by the fast fashion industry, Velvet Moon gives new life to materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill, creating garments that are as meaningful as they are stylish.
At Velvet Moon, we are known for our unique approach to design, blending nostalgia with modern fashion. Every piece I create is carefully crafted by hand, with a focus on quality and individuality. Our designs range from upcycled jackets to reimagined vintage textiles, each one telling a story and carrying its own energy. I believe that every item of clothing deserves respect and a second chance, and that philosophy guides everything I do.
What I’m most proud of is how Velvet Moon has stayed true to its core values: creativity, sustainability, and community. Despite the challenges of running a small business, Velvet Moon has remained a space where people can find not only unique fashion but also a deeper connection to the items they wear. It’s about offering an alternative to mass-produced, disposable fashion by embracing a more thoughtful and intentional approach to style.
I want readers to know that Velvet Moon is more than just a brand; it’s a philosophy. It’s about seeing beauty in what already exists, giving things a second chance, and creating pieces that are both sustainable and deeply personal. Whether you’re looking for something special to add to your wardrobe or want to learn more about the impact of slow fashion, Velvet Moon is here to inspire and offer a more conscious way to dress.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is the act of creation—whether it’s transforming a vintage piece of fabric into something new or designing a garment that tells a story. I find joy in bringing new life to things that would otherwise be overlooked, and in the satisfaction of making something that feels meaningful. There’s a special kind of happiness in the process itself, where creativity and intention come together.
I also find happiness in community—whether it’s through the weekly sewing circle I host or the connections I’ve built with others who share a passion for sustainability and thoughtful design. It’s inspiring to see people come together to share ideas and support each other in their creative journeys.
Ultimately, happiness for me comes from staying true to my values—creativity, sustainability, and connection—and seeing those values reflected in the work I do and the people I interact with.
