Meet Abby Bakersmith of Bumble

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Bakersmith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Of course! After graduating from Ole Miss and spending time in both London and New York, I was looking for a challenge and ultimately accepted a position with a global PR agency in Los Angeles before I had ever stepped foot in the state of California.

I spent nearly three years there and learned so much more than I could have imagined from my first ‘real job.’ I eventually pivoted to a short-lived but incredible role in the entertainment industry before landing at Bumble.

Overall, I think my career mantra has been “have a path, but be flexible.”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh goodness, there have been so many, but I am totally ok with that – it keeps life interesting! I am less than four years into my career and definitely don’t have it all figured out yet, so I am reminding myself to find growth in the struggles.

One thing that stands out – as a very curious person, it has been tempting to buy into the notion that we all have a singular passion or calling in life, but that search for singularity in a job led to many nights of self-doubt and questioning.

It has only been very recently that I’ve started to understand and believe that being multi-faceted and having varied interests is not only a good thing but necessary to feel fulfilled. As a visual person, and honestly just a total nerd for charts, it helps me to picture a Venn diagram: Of all the circles in your life, how can you connect as many as possible?

Throughout my career, it has also been a challenge for me to focus on being present, rather than worrying about what is next. A mentor of mine once told me that ‘almost nothing you are worried about today will define your tomorrow.’ I remind myself of this daily, and it allows me to relax and do my best work.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bumble – what should we know?
Bumble is a connection driven social networking app that aims to eradicate misogyny by encouraging women to make the first move in relationships, whether you are dating, looking for friends, or growing your professional network. Within Bumble, I am the West Coast Field Marketing Manager which means that I oversee a truly incredible team of Queen Bees throughout the state to host events, partnerships, activations, and more. Our Queen Bees are the faces of Bumble in their city and help us to spread our mission and values throughout their communities.

I think what really sets Bumble apart from other social networking apps, and why I love it so dearly, is the desire to translate what we are doing online into real life. Bumble has truly become an authentic movement, and we hope to encourage kindness, equality, confidence, and respect in any relationship — whether online or off. It is unlike anything I have ever been a part of, and I feel lucky every day to play a role in something so meaningful.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think success is a moving target, and something very personal. For me, right now, success is feeling challenged in a way that feels like an adventure and not a burden – ask me again next week!
