Life & Work with Yessi Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yessi Sanchez.

Hi Yessi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started performing in mini playback shows, which are competitions for kids who perform to popular songs when I was three years old. Although my very first performance was a little bit of a struggle – I was so nervous, I didn’t move at all – I kept going, and took singing and acting lessons. My professional career began in Zurich, Switzerland, working on different short films and commercials. My first lead role in a feature film followed shortly after in “The Radicalization of Jeff Boyd”, which is available on Amazon Prime. To open up more doors in the film industry, I took my career to Los Angeles, where I was fortunate to gain incredible experiences.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Moving to a different city, let alone a different country was definitely a big challenge. I was lucky to have been accepted at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2017, which made my transition to Los Angeles a little bit smoother. But I learned a lot about myself, my boundaries and my goals while living here. As a creative, I think it’s very hard to set boundaries for oneself. Sometimes it gets really busy, and it’s important to take breaks. I think it took me years to learn that, and I’m still struggling with that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Over the last few years, I had the opportunity to be a part of some incredible projects. Some of them are coming out this year, and it’s very exciting. I’m especially proud of my role in a 90s TV series reboot. It was very popular in Germany and one of my favorite shows growing up. So being able to play a character in that show feels very surreal.

I also have some projects lined up for later this year. I usually am more drawn to dramatic pieces, but these projects will be comedic, so it’s going to be a great challenge for me.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts. Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love being in nature and exploring different hiking trails around the city. Sometimes I need to get out of this wonderful, chaotic city and feel grounded again. Road trips and hikes definitely make me happy. But I also try to take care of myself as much as I can with the help of yoga and meditation.
