Life & Work with Victor Sotomayor of San Fernando Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Sotomayor.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing poetry and sharing in open mics around L.A. Eventually, I wrote several poems inspired by the characters from The Wizard of Oz by combining Frank L. Baum’s classic novel plus adding pop cultural references and influences. A very good friend surprised me and published The Oz Monologues as well as helped me put a theatrical production in West Hollywood during the Hollywood Fringe Festival in 2018. The success of this production took us to direct The Great Goodwin in Saint Petersburg, Russia and another production called The Journey of The Little Prince.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I personally struggled with self doubt and lack of confidence. The work had to start from within, finding out my voice and what message am I conveying through my poetry and my art. Turns out that I needed good friends I can fully trust and get their encouragement and support to make dreams happen.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Besides having published two poetry books and producing theatre plays, I co-founded Theria Entertainment and created a segment to highlight poets from everywhere in a segment I called Theria Poetry, which plays every Friday in our app Theria Radio. I’m proud to represent the poetry community in addition to cater to musicians and artists of all walks of life. I’m also the chief editor of Theria Magazine which I’m quite proud of.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Writing, sharing, inspiring through poetry and storytelling. Happiness is seeing other people get inspired by my art and bringing out the poet in them because everybody has a story to tell. I would love to bring attention to the artist and their art. Nothing more gratifying.
