Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomory Dodge.
Hi Tomory, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an artist living and working in LA. I came to The Los Angeles area in 2002 for grad school and have been based here ever since. My studio has been in the City Terrace neighborhood for the past thirteen years. Since graduating from CalArts in 2004, I have worked with many galleries locally and internationally, including the storied LA gallery ACME. I currently show with Philip Martin Gallery in LA and Miles McEnery Gallery in New York.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never easy to be an artist, but that said, I have been fairly fortunate. I was lucky to leave grad school with a strong interest in my work and exhibitions scheduled far into the future. These were heady times for sure, but things inevitably level out and I’ve been able to sustain my career since. The biggest struggles I’ve had tend to be with the work itself. I’ve always made it a priority to push the work in new directions and maintain a consistent process of inquiry. If this means changing the direction of the work and potentially losing the interest of some collectors or curators, so be it. The good ones, the ones that are able to understand the work in depth, stick around.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work has taken many, many forms over the years. I have worked in college, I have made a fair amount of music, I have made some limited forays into sculpture, but central to all this, the anchor of everything I do is painting. My early work was most easily defined as representational landscape-based painting, but things quickly began to move into a more abstract direction. I’ve long been interested in how painting can be used to help us understand our experience of the world. I’m interested in perception in its widest sense.
