Today we’d like to introduce you to Therese Curatolo.
Therese, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally from Reno/Tahoe Dad is the professional musician so my musical influence comes directly from the source. I started playing the guitar around 13 years old & quickly began songwriting.
It was hard to juggle the singer-songwriter and the vocalist in me when I went to University for Operatic Voice – that took me to New York City where I was invited to audition for the Metropolitan Opera. Lived there for a term singing off-Broadway and working on various musical projects.
Fast forward to the plunge into Los Angeles that has been the most gratifying. Before I started touring, I was a print model/commercial face by day & gigging musician by night. In 2020 with the world and our industry at a standstill, I was able to get into the studio and start pumping out this music. I’ve had the privilege of singing alongside some musical giants and collaborating with fantastic musicians/bands, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox & Scary Pockets being the most recent.
Currently releasing my first EP and the music is rolling out at a steady pace.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
*hey Alexa, play “L.A. Struggle” by Therese Curatolo. The struggle is real and as personal as our struggles are, I think struggling in the entertainment industry (more specifically, Los Angeles) is a very collective & relatable struggle. Looking back on the last decade, my “struggles” now feel very privileged – my biggest woe was always feeling like I was getting to the finish line but never crossing it. To this day, I struggle with self-doubt, “how do I get into that room?” where do I fit in, is this a pipe dream, do I conform, am I living under a rock, will my music reach anyone, all of the mental stress that comes with navigating this industry. No matter how much you accomplish, there’s a push to do and be more.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer-songwriter. If you follow me online you’ll know me from singing with internet sensations, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox & Scary Pockets. I’m proud of all of my work and everyone that I work with, it’s very hard to narrow that one down.
No one else is me… I take so much pride in that. That’s what sets me apart from others.
What were you like growing up?
I’m definitely an old soul. As a kid, I lived in my own musical world – my parents used to refer to me as Ethel Merman. I was always singing, performing & not just performing but like emulating the greatest performers of all time. I wanted to mimic them as best I could. What’s weird though, I was very shy – very camera shy & didn’t like performing on stage until I was in middle school. Thank God for my younger brother, we’re thick as thieves and we would have the best time doing almost everything together, especially music. Fast forward to today: nothing’s changed.
