Life & Work with Terry Urban

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Urban.

Terry Urban

Hi Terry, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Dropped out of community college to pursue a career in skateboarding. Then I picked up DJing along the way and got really good at it. So, I moved to NYC to pursue it. Meanwhile, art was on the back burner for many years until about 6-7 years ago I started painting again. I wanted a more creative outlet in life, and basically that’s where I am at today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. I was broke in NYC for most of the 12 years I lived there. Was living month to month and digging quarters out of my couch to feed myself that night. DJing was an up-and-down roller coaster on my bank account and I wasn’t really getting ahead fast enough because the scene had been consumed with so many DJs at that time. Plus I was getting older and didn’t want to be in the clubs anymore. So I started painting again and at that time I had no idea how to sell myself in the art world. So yes, it was a huge struggle for me transitioning from dj to painter.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a painter. My style is usually dark imagery with bright colors. Some people may know me from my process videos on social media.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I use Spotify on the reg. I cannot go without music while painting. It inspires me greatly.
