Life & Work with Tamara Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Hernandez.

Hi Tamara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Brooklyn and grew up in The Bronx. My mom was mostly a stay-at-home mom raising my older sister, my twin sister and I while my dad worked as a plumber so very working class. One of the main reasons for my interest in the arts was my mom was being very artistic while we were growing up. My mom majored in Art at the Fashion Institute of Technology so she was always teaching us how to draw and encouraging us to do arts and crafts. I was always interested in photography but couldn’t afford to get a camera in high school so when I graduated, I bought my first DSLR camera in 2015. As a hobby while in college, I used it to take pictures of my friends and family. The hobby fell off for a while I’d pick it up here and there but I think what really made me start taking photography more seriously was the pandemic in 2020. I found a used Nikon point-and-shoot camera and took pictures to test it that summer. It made me remember my love for taking pictures in a different way. I still use digital but since then I’ve been taking most of my photos on film. I moved to Los Angeles at the end of 2021 and have been building my portfolio.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it has been the smoothest road. I feel like a main struggle in photography for me is being a perfectionist plus an introvert! I never felt ready to share my work because I didn’t have the best lighting or the best lens or the best camera. But I’ve learned it’s really not about the equipment you have it’s about the person taking the photos and the finished product. I decided that I shouldn’t feel the need to have the best of everything to take good photos and it was definitely a struggle for me at first but I’ve embraced using my cheap film and my Canon T5.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in digital and film photography! I’m most proud of the portraits I’ve been able to capture since moving to Los Angeles, I love being able to take pictures of my friends and their creative journeys as well! I’m most proud of since moving to Los Angeles is being able to photograph live music inside of The Viper Room on Sunset Blvd. I’d say what sets me apart is that I have a unique eye for capturing the beauty in both portrait and landscape photography. I strive to create images that tell a story!

I want to thank VoyageLA so much for their interest in me and my art as a small creator it means so much to me to be able to share my work with you guys!
