Life & Work with Sylvon Marshall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvon Marshall.

Hi Sylvon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got started in the music business is a story I just recently started sharing to help inspire. In June of 2006, I was arrested and charged with my first & only felony, after my plea bargain it was very difficulty and I didn’t want to be part of the revolving door system of going back and forth to jail, so I asked my father Troy Marshall who at the time was the VP and Head of the Rap Department for Interscope Records for help getting a job and he made the decision to put me on the lifestyle marketing/street team and started my indie promo journey for ten years. During that time, I worked with every single major label as well as becoming the manager for the group Cali Swag District who made the song “Teach Me How to Dougie”. In May 2017, I was hired at Epic Records to be the Urban Promotions West Coast Rep and recently in June, I was promoted to West Coast Director of Urban Promotions & Lifestyle along with National Mixshow responsibilities.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has its drawbacks to be the son of a great industry exec, sometimes people just wanna deal with pops ya know. Other challenges, I would say it’s just being in LA. I am born and raised here but because it’s the 2nd biggest market there are a lot of fake industry people who mess up the game for the real industry people.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My current responsibilities to sum it up is dealing with certain PDs in my market and djs radio & club alike on a national level to have my roster of artist music played along with overseeing our strategically placed lifestyle marketing reps is selected markets.

My specialty is promo plain and simple!!!

I’m most proud of my growth as an exec also the accomplishment of have three back to back to back(a three peat) of #1 records on Urban radio in my first six months when I started at Epic along with finishing the 2017 year as the #1 Urban radio team in the industry.

TBH nothing special, I just keep my word and do the job, in today’s industry that’s a rarity, I also don’t rely on my family name I make sure people respect me for me and my work and not just being the son of Troy Marshall.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Contrary to most industry people’s belief, my first radio mentors were Mar Brown(R.I.P.) and Derrick “D Trane” Traylor and not my father. Pops definitely taught me how to organize my information & build/strengthen my relationships on a whole different scale I didn’t know.

Other execs in the business I have to give credit for my success and growth in the business is Azim Rashid, Wilt Wallace, Carlos Ogando, Dave House, Jay Andino, Brian Samson, Ghazi Shami, Arnold Taylor, June Cardona, Chris Green and last but definitely not least Benny Pough & Traci Adams without them I would have not been able to elevate the way I have in the past four years. Every single person I have named molded me without question to the exec I am today.
