Life & Work with Sumer Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sumer Smith.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a 22-year-old female from Philadelphia, West Philly to be exact. Two years ago, I had this idea of making an all-natural skin care product. This drastically changed in 2021 when I decided that I wanted to switch lanes and make hair care products. I got this idea because I was tired of the results from mainstream hair companies. During that time, I knew I wanted to step up and make a change in the African American community by providing natural hair care products that will help manage our different hair types. My first product was my hair growth oil which helps grow and strengthen your hair from roots to ends. In November of 2021, I provided a few family and friends with samples and did a trial run. Within a few months later, they started to see results from the hair growth oil.

After the positive feedback, I felt like I was missing something so then I decided that I wanted to create a whole healthy hair care system. Before creating a hair care system, I wasn’t using one that include shampoo, conditioner, hair oil, edge control, and moisturizer with the same ingredients that are beneficial to the scalp and hair. Fast forward to June 17th, 2022, I released my business Amour Your Scalp. Our products can be used for both daily styling, pretreatment, and growth. Infused with castor oil to stimulate hair growth and hemp seed oil to repair dry hair. My main goal is to give women a system to take care of their hair without the worry of harmful chemicals and provide products our community can trust and use for generations. I want our customers to feel secure and confident when using the products.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. It took a lot of dedication and faith. I struggled with having faith and believing in myself and my business. Sometimes I question myself if making hair care products was my calling. However, I speak positive affirmations and read daily devotions which helps me a lot.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Outside of making hair care products, I work in the medical field as a nurse’s aide/behavior technician. I have been in this field for two years. I enjoy what I do because it allows me to meet a lot of people even though the circumstances are in an unfortunate setting. I am most known for my bubble personality and free-spirited aura. I’m most proud of juggling my full-time job and a full-time business. Also, the feedback I get from women that look just like me says things like, “Keep going, we are super-proud. You are representing us.’ I hope I can inspire this next generation of Black women to be true to themselves and go after all their dreams.

What sets me apart from others is that alongside my brand being natural and providing vegan products, I try my best to live a holistic lifestyle that includes vegan options.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like the most about being from Philadelphia Is how creative we are. It is so much talent here and so many resources. We also have great food spots and beautiful monumental sites. What I least like about being from Philadelphia is sometimes people think you are competing with them which makes it hard to receive support. However, I can only speak for myself I love seeing us all win and grow bigger, especially the women. Because I will forever be a girls, girl.
