Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Garrett.
Hi Steve, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 1986, at the age of 17, I had the good fortune to meet Master André Salvage and the art of Kung Fu San Soo. It was a crucial point in my young life, with violence and trauma occurring in all aspects of my life. So, I began studying Kung Fu as a channel for my rage and trauma. Under Master Salvage, I began to heal those parts of me that felt broken, unheard, and traumatized. I’ve taught Kung Fu since 1993 to all genders, creeds, and ages. And in another aspect of my life, I competed and taught swing dancing, became internationally ranked in competitive dance, and even won a world championship. I achieved my rank as Master of Kung Fu San Soo in April of 2002, still from André Salvage. Over the intervening years, I have taught hundreds of people this ancient art and (I hope) helped many find the same healing and peace that I have.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not a “smooth road” to learn Kung Fu. The main ingredient for real friendship is time. Time spent doing a thing. Time spent existing with a common goal. Kung Fu San Soo has been an enduring friendship for me. So, my time was spent on the goal of healing my young hurt and rage. Being angry in violent situations is dangerous—it can lead to jail, injury, or death. But, my friend was always there to guide me with the thousands of years of lived experience, skill, and wisdom that I was the beneficiary of.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in the art of fighting, a path to peace and stillness through the discipline of martial art. My art is Kung Fu San Soo, as taught to Sifu André Salvage by Lo Sifu Jimmy H. Woo. My lineage in this art traces back centuries. And I am grateful to all the previous masters that practiced, preserved, and innovated in this art. I am most proud to be a link in this chain of traditions.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With some embarrassment, I see the fight industry becoming more like a gladiatorial sport than the way of stillness I practice. It is a dangerous time.
