Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Kiuchi.
Hi Sophia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am an Illustrator and Designer from Torrance, CA, currently based in Los Angeles. I have always been a creative person from a very young age, but I became serious about pursuing such a career in high school. Drawing and painting were consistent interests of mine growing up, so it was only natural for me to study Illustration, namely at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Going to ArtCenter was an arduous process at first. I moved away from home and threw myself into a brand new environment with zero friends, not to mention the rigorous curriculum and drastic change of pace in lifestyle. It was a lot to acclimate to, but with time and patience, I eventually found my footing and met people that I consider my best friends today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in realistic digital portraiture and often pair my work with typography. Most of my work focuses on the music and entertainment industry, but I also enjoy creating work focused on news stories and personal anecdotes. The primary goal behind my work is to find unique but simple solutions to depicting a figure or moment in time.
How do you think about luck?
I believe that opportunities are a combination of producing good, compelling work and being at the right place or knowing the right person at the right time. So I would say luck has always played some kind of role in my life and career. I will always put my best effort into the work I produce, but the ratio between the two will always exist, and it will be teetering throughout my life and career.
