Today we’d like to introduce you to Shreya Devarakonda.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My parents saw that I was drawn to art from a young age, and it’s something that has stayed constant in my life since. I grew up watching animated films and was obsessed with Disney characters, and knew I wanted to work on movies one day. With the support of my loving parents, I went to art school and thought I wanted to be an animator, so I did computer animation- then quickly realized it wasn’t for me. I missed drawing. I explored story and visual development, and ultimately chose character design because it felt most natural to me. I went on to experience working at several animation studios and got to focus on perfecting my craft, as well as learn so much from the most talented, inspiring people.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has mostly been a smooth and steady road, and I really do have to thank my lucky stars and all the support I have for that. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that I got along the way because I know how difficult and intimidating it is to break into the animation industry. This is not to say I haven’t experienced extreme self-doubt and imposter syndrome throughout my journey though. I still really struggle with that to this day, but it’s totally normal to go through!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently a Character Designer at DreamWorks Animation. I work closely with Directors and the team to interpret abstract concepts and story ideas into fun and unique character designs. I am most proud of breaking stereotypes and being one of the few Indian Americans in the animation industry. I absolutely love my job and am so happy I got endless support from my whole family. I hope I inspire other people like me to take risks and follow their passion.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I can sing! I learned Carnatic music growing up, and used to do perform in contests and competitions. But now I only do it for fun. I also weightlift regularly and am very passionate about maintaining an active lifestyle and striving to become my best self!
