Life & Work with Sheila Galmat of México City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Galmat.

Hi Sheila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I believe that everything starts in my childhood, I really believe that the support of my family during my growth and the interest on art was the principal support of my career. During my teenage years I work on a indepent magazine or zine as a photographer and I work in a side more creative as a “art director”.

On my school formation as a designer I try to explore more the artist side and find my own voice as and an illustrator, having knowledge of the publishing aspect, my interest began to develop within that field. Until my work as graphic designer working in a entertaiment and I developtment more in the artist way working in some social projects.

With all the esperience, deep inside me, the need began to grow to develop myself in something that has been very present in my life: illustration. And the interest to do something with my voice and my perspective of the world.

Until 4 years ago that I try for fisrt time take seriusly and really try the build my style, my voice, and even the reason what I draw or make art. I work on do it better and better and take my work to the next level, I practice every day to traduce what is in my mind and make the thinks and the world I love to live.

When I say that I’ve been working for 4 years is only for my independing work, but years ago have a lot of years of study and practice and even work as a graphic designer and this experience is part of the skills that have brought me to where I am today. The thinks I mean to say is that every experience is crucial in the traducction of your soul in your art or your work.

Today I work as an art director of an a agency and as a freelance illustratior as my principal work and the recognicion of my work throw the industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think that when you’re not honest with you and the feeling or even your thoughts is more difficult. The way of a creative life is difficult just for the privilege to live in.

And more that a motivational speach, I would to say that it this is the real way you want to follow you need to do. In life, many of us have similar experiences and paths already traveled, but though not in the way you perceive the world. Being honest with yourself will make your journey much easier.

I believe that despite the difficulties, I am aware of the privilege I have had and of seeing paths I will never have to travel because of it. However, I should never take for granted what I have built and always to improve in order to reach the goal I am interested in achieving.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I dedicate myself to creating original artwork inspired by personal experiences and nostalgic, emotional memories.

My work seeks to empower women from a perspective that embraces the tenderness and strength of their personalities, which, thanks to society, we try to maintain as a revolutionary way of seeing the world—a tender perspective. This, in turn, reinforces the act of rebellion by being part of that strength.

Currently, I sell my work at art events such as exhibitions and art sales in Mexico City, seeking to expand my work worldwide.

I am constantly seeking professional growth and am currently interested in developing editorial and commercial projects where I can collaborate with a similar perspective and translate my vision through my style as an illustrator.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think that overcoming the fear of what others will say, knowing who you are honestly so you can connect with people through your work and communicate your perspective of the world through it, is key.

From my perspective, connecting with my audience personally, one-on-one, has helped me take my work to new and positive levels, allowing my project to grow.
