Life & Work with Sharon Robertson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Robertson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was the kid that always enjoyed being creative. My grandfather was an architect in Chicago and my mother is hugely creative. I was constantly re-painting and re-arranging my bedroom as a child. I received my degree in Fine Art, but always had an interest in architecture and interiors. I began my career straight out of college at an architecture firm right before the recession of 2008. I transitioned to retail and merchandise styling due to income and stability, at the time. It was a slow road back to interior design, but I learned a lot of relevant business skills along the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
After years of working for some top firms, I took a step back for work-life balance after becoming a mom to a Special Needs child. Being someone who can become consumed with my creative work, running my own studio forced me to balance and have more flexibility and patience than I would otherwise like. A constant reminder that there are no “furniture emergencies”, and I can meet deadlines and manage projects without being attached to my work around the clock.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been very fortunate that the clients who come to me share my love for approachable, unpretentious homes. I prefer timeless designs with a minimalist lean. That’s not to say that I create sterile or cold interiors. On the contrary; I help clients honor and create space for the things they own that bring them value and happiness. It brings me so much joy creating something that families are seeing and interacting with every single day. Making their daily lives easier, more seamless and more beautiful. In this small way, I get to help impact the lives of a variety of clients.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Discipline and pragmatism. As any mother of young children will tell you, you don’t have the luxury of sleep or alone time. Even more so as the mother of a medically-complex child. The ability to prioritize and work smarter has enabled me to manage a large scope of projects without sacrificing my own family.
