Hi Shahira, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a young girl, I was confronted with the harsh reality of hunger and homelessness while on vacation in Egypt. Witnessing children my age living without basic necessities stirred something deep within me – an aspiration to make a meaningful difference for these people. My father left me with words that would alter the course of my life forever: “Give them jobs, not money.” That single statement became monumental enough for me to gravitate towards creating The Dirty Cookie – from small beginnings sprung an initiative aimed at changing lives!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is no easy task, that’s for sure! That certainly was true for me; when I made the jump from aerospace into baking it felt like starting all over again. Not only did I have to learn how to bake (something completely new!), but there’s so much science behind creating cookie cups – and then having to source molds overseas with tight deadlines meant things got even tougher! It was hard work–but worth every bit of effort in the end.
