Life & Work with Sean Grant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Grant.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in stand-up comedy shortly after high school in Miami and all through college at Florida State University. Luckily they built a Comedy Zone and Bonkers in Tallahassee at the same time so between those gigs, poetry rooms, campus events and road gigs, I was able to get a great early comedy education. This education was capped off my Junior year by the opportunity to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and win Funniest College Kid in America.

Blah blah blah… I moved to Atlanta and guests appeared on an episode of Meet the Browns during its final season. Blah blee blee…moved to LA was named a JFL Fresh Face 2019, got on two seasons of Tru TV’s Laff Tracks, made a comedy album with Comedy Records in Canada, guest appeared on an episode of Maron on IFC and WTF Baron Davis on FUSE. Within that was bouts with homelessness, depression, finding God and being blessed and fulfilled beyond belief and still I feel weird sharing it as my story because I feel I am only beginning my story.

But I hope it blesses someone to know that those so called highlights I am always tempted to share are less than 5% of what this business has been for me. The best part of my career is the moment I looked at every bar show and bomb as a highlight as well. Every moment doing or pursuing comedy is better than every moment I am not.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I used to call them struggles… I perceive them more as challenges but YES whatever you call them…I’ve had em all. I’ve been boo’ed, stared at, talked over, bombed in front of family members, friends, girlfriends, girlfriends parents and all the like. Let’s not even get into the rejection when it comes to acting gigs and that stuff.

Focusing on shows, shows are like life and death to me… it doesn’t matter if the Emperor of NBC is in the crowd or a bunch of redneck drunks, I amp myself up as if this is the last show I’ll ever do. One day I’ll be right.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most proud of my first appearance on Laff Tracks. It went well at the live taping…all one take and the sketch that accompanied my voice on the show was well done. Not by me but by Tru Tv and its producers. I was also very happy to be named a JFL Newface 2019. Getting there felt like I was put in an archive of comedians somewhere that someday in a distant future some kid might see my name and explore my art and hopefully enjoy it.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Persistence. And being really bad at everything else.
