Life & Work with Sean E DeMott of Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean E DeMott.

Hi Sean E, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi.

I started as an emerging musician in a band with zero money in the 80’s as a teenager in Hollywood. We rehearsed in a condemned building in a really bad neighborhood in Hollywood. I pivoted into a few more bands then got my big break after I sent a demo to NY to record label that was owned by Sony. I then joined more bands and got record deals with Geffen and did sessions for gangster rappers to pay rent playing guitar.

I slowly started to find demo’s by other bands and shop them to labels and got a bidding war started for a band when I down to my last few pennies with my guitars in the pawn shop. After getting multiple bands bidding wars I was offered an executive role at Universal Music. I went on to do A n R at three more major labels.

After that I joined a start up music streaming service that was competing with Spotify and I raised money for a production company that was a hybrid of Masterclass meets Guitar Hero that got picked up by Netflix. The company went bust but the director of SAW II, III and IV called asked me to produce his movie. I had no idea how to do that but I figured it out and sold it to Netflix. Since then I’ve joined the P.G.A and produced 18 movies with a wide release coming 4th qtr 2025 with Neon. I started an IP / publishing company and secured investment from Sony Japan and currently have an office on the Sony Pictures Lot in Culver City CA. We’ve got 72 comic books in 200 stores by October 2025. The plan is to turn these books into movies. toys and games. Wish me luck from here!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a very rough ride. Dealing with poverty, friend’s and business partners OD’ing on drugs. Record labels dropping you due to company merging and executives in your corner being laid off or retiring. Freinamies and competing executives back stabbing.

I had a life changing moment during covid when they discovered cancer in my colon on a random doctors visit by luck. I had to go from dr. to dr. and try and get my insurance to jump in and co ordinate the whole thing during the 1st week of covid and had two major surgeries. I drove myself to the hospital and healed by myself for two years. I closed two movie deals and secured a record contract while covered in stitches up my stomach.

My wins usually involve me smashing and kicking doors down with sweet and blood. No win has ever been smooth and easy….. never one time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known for darker and edgier street themed feature film content. I’ve produced mostly horror but the drama’s I’ve produced are dark and deal with racism and suicide. I’m very familiar with both.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Yes-

Ross Robinson is my mentor. I got sidetracked when my Geffen release got shelved. I started down a bad path hanging out with gangsters and he pulled me out of that and gave me a job as his production assistant. He did it to help me,.he didn’t; need me actually,,was just helping me. Ross produced music. (Korn, Slipknot, The Cure). He changed my energy and karma.

Cliff Cultreri is an A n R guy from the Bronx. He gave me my first break and signed my punk band when 6 of us lived in a one bedroom in Hollywood. He got me on 1st base of my career. He’s a legend and signed Common, Fat Joe and discovered Steve Vai Slash and Joe Satriani. Talk about diverse taste.

Monte Lippman- He’s the CEO of Republic / Universal. He’s the hottest A n R guy in the game and bullet proof. He gave me an imprint deal before I deserved one. I feel I let him down but I’ll never forget him for that.

Mike Rothman- He’s a TV executive and gave me a P.A. gig when I was down to nothing and was making bad choices. We later became like family and share an office on the Sony Lot in Culver City as film and tv producers.
